We were located in Quang Tri Province from January to August 1968. 1/31/68 to 2/01/68 there was a battle during this time period involved 1 BDE 1 cav, 1/5, 1/12, 1 ARVN REG also includes 1st Marine Div. and 3rd ARVN Task Force. This was a Multi-phased operation that included air assualts by helicopter that also included the rebuilding of Route 9. OPERATION JEB STUART: Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam, Location: Quang Tri Description:The 1st Cav was near Quang Tri when the enemy launched their Tet Offensive. The Bde assaulted for companies into HOT LZ's around the village of Thon AN Thai, just east of Quang Tri. The first task was to knock out the NVA's heavy weapons support and then block the enemy form the rear. The ARA and artillery found many NVA moving along Route 1. While the fighting would last for 10 days the enemy would loose more then 875 killed and 100 captured. The 1/5 Cav. and the 1/12 Cav. combined with the 1st ARVN Regiment and the 9th ARVN ABN Battalion to fight the 812th NVA Regiment plus the 10th NVA Sapper, the K-4 and the K-8 Battalions. This source came from 1st Team page 156, Chron P. 66 In
march, during one of our firefights we air assaulted southeast of Quang
Tri. We were in the rear of a NVA regiment battalions. The entire company
was airmobiled onto one side of Highway 1. Company A was used just
south of the road for blocking positions. We went forward and ran into
the 812th NVA regiment. Along with supporting helicopter gunships, we
quickly destroyed this fighting unit. |
